The New Land – The Dream of America
The Swedish emigration to America is the largest population migration in Swedish history. Between the years 1830–1930, 1.3 million Swedes moved to America. Almost a fifth of the then-Swedish population made the long and sometimes demanding journey across the Atlantic to create a better life in the new country.

Emigration is often reported in charts and tables, but behind these figures are living and vibrant human destinies, and it was these very real people who chose to leave their homeland, their family, and their relatives. In the exhibition, you meet emigrants from their break-up in Sweden, their journey to America, and their life in the new country. Life stories like that of Mina Andersson, Peter Erlandsson, the Nilsson family, Vera Johnson, and many more.
